Celebrating Malaysia’s 69th National Day

through creativity, heritage and collaboration

In celebration of Malaysia’s 69th National Day, 69 individual Wau came together at Pavilion Bukit Jalil — each one carrying a different interpretation of Malaysia through the eyes of young creatives.

Created by students from UCSI University’s Institute of Creative Arts and Design (ICAD), the artworks drew inspiration from Malaysian culture, heritage, landmarks, nature and national identity. Displayed across three floors of the mall, they transformed a familiar Malaysian cultural icon into a vibrant collective celebration of creativity and unity.

It Started with a Blank Canvas

Before there were 69 colourful artworks, there were 69 blank Wau.

KB Colour helped bring the project’s physical foundation to life by producing and cutting the Wau-shaped canvases that would become the starting point for each student’s creation.

From there, the blank forms were placed in the hands of the ICAD students. Each became a canvas for a different idea, with students sketching, painting and adding their own creative interpretations directly onto the Wau.

What began as the same blank form gradually became 69 completely individual pieces — each reflecting a different story, perspective and expression of Malaysia.

From the Studio to Pavilion Bukit Jalil

Once the artworks were completed, the next stage was getting them ready to be experienced beyond the studio.

KB Colour assisted in preparing the finished Wau for display and bringing the installation together at Pavilion Bukit Jalil. Positioned along the mall’s balustrades across three floors, the individual artworks became part of one large visual experience.

From a distance, visitors saw a colourful celebration filling the mall. Up close, every Wau revealed its own details, ideas and personality.

69 Different Stories. One Shared Identity.

No two Wau were exactly alike.

Some celebrated familiar Malaysian symbols and landmarks. Others explored traditional motifs, nature, culture and contemporary interpretations of national identity. Together, they reflected something equally Malaysian — our diversity.

The project brought together the creativity of UCSI University – ICAD students, the public platform of Pavilion Bukit Jalil and KB Colour’s production and execution support to turn a simple blank canvas into a mall-wide National Day showcase.

It is a reminder that collaboration does not mean everyone doing the same thing. It means everyone contributing what they do best towards one shared outcome.
